Robert Edwards, University of California at San Francisco : « The origin of synaptic vesicle pools ».

Despite their apparent morphological homogeneity, synaptic vesicles belong to functionally distinct pools. The differences between pools were originally attributed to differences in their cytoskeletal attachment or history, but the imaging of specific synaptic vesicle proteins now shows that they differ as well in the composition of membrane proteins. Distinct endocytic pathways appear to generate the different pools, and the specific membrane proteins assembled contribute to their functional properties.
